LA JOLLA — The former bookkeeper for the now closed and once popular Jack’s La Jolla dining and entertainment venue has been accused by San Diego police of embezzling more than $3 million from the business and is being held in county jail. Seized from her home were more than $400,000 in antiques, furniture, paintings and other items she is accused of purchasing with the suspected embezzled funds. She is being held on $2.5 million bail. Open for more than four years, Jack’s closed in July 2009, a direct result of the alleged theft, states a Police Department news release. Bill Berkley, who had owned the three-level complex, said Thursday he blames the bookkeeper for the sudden closure of his business two years ago. The bookkeeper was a former employee who worked for Jacks since 1993. There’s a substantial amount of money that was misdirected by her. Berkley said. “Jack’s would be open today were it not for her. I’m pleased she cannot harm any other people in the future, but it’s unfortunate that because of her, 120 people lost their jobs.”
